Some Serious Downtime

We have been travelling for six months now, and we were feeling the need for some downtime. It was perfect timing that the “Kalkan Crowd”, unfortunately minus Bryn and Gail, came out to Thailand for a holiday. Before they came out, we had not spent more than four days in one place; so it was nice to unpack our rucksacks, lay back, amd do NOTHING!.
It can be quite tiring travelling, as there is a constant process of packing up the rucksacks, getting in or on a tuk tuk/taxi/motorbike/bus/aeroplane, and sometimes several in one day, to get to the next place. We constantly have to check the timetables and book hotels as well as hang around in bus and railway stations and airports. That’s not to say it’s not great fun, and it certainly beats working for a living, but it has all to be factored in.
So to have six friends who you can talk about “normal” stuff was great. We caught up with lots of news from home, and restricted our “travelling stories” to a few per day. This meant that our time was spent relaxing between the loungers, Nana’s on the Beach, and the bars and restaurants in the local village in the evenings. It was nice to have a lovely room, with some simple luxuries like a bath – the first in six months.
We felt refreshed after the eight days, and said our goodbyes to the crowd. But that wasn’t the end of it as we spent a further six days in Bangkok. In a mix of a hotel and Airbnb, we relaxed and wandered around, without going too far. We are coming to the end of our six months in Asia, so are starting to gear up for the next phase in New Zealand and beyond. We are looking forward to a different culture, and very different scenery, before the unknown of South America in 2019.
We still have some time in Thailand before we have four days in Sydney, to catch up with everyone,
Paul and Tim
