Latest Update – December 2017

Haven’t written much for a while, but basically we have settled in well, and we have managed to sort everything out from food, shops, where to get a haircut, buying all our ski gear, and ensuring the apartment is ready for visitors etc.

In addition, the resorts are not fully open yet, and there are only two shuttle buses working, so skiing is limited to about a third of the Portes de Soleil area. With the weather being very snowy, the village has almost been constantly under snow. The place is magical as the snow has remained on the trees for over a week now, and the Christmas lights have been on in the village, including outside the apartment.

Overall we have been out skiing on six days, ranging from just a couple of hours to six hours. The snow is amazing and we have had a chance to look at the closest resorts.

  • Les Gets is very pretty and seems to be high up on a plateau with incredible views and wide runs
  • Avoriaz is particularly unattractive, but I must say that from above it is spectacular as it appears to cling to the steep cliff edge.
  • The Hauts-Forts area is very high and is a mix of lovely red runs and all sorts of off-piste peaks and bowls, which are fantastic in the powdery snow
  • The lower end of Lindarets and Ardent are fun-filled and full of off-piste snow areas. We went down the bowl at Chaux-Fleurie in knee-deep powder
  • Most amazing of all was the Wall going down into Les Crosets.  One of the hardest runs in Europe with a half mile and steep mogul field.  Just as well we did it in deep snow!!

There have been some amazing pics which you can see here.

Now we are gearing up for Christmas.  We have bought a turkey and all the trimmings, and look forward to having it after a day’s skiing on Monday.
